HISTORY of AWANA
Founded in 1941 as a weekly children’s ministry by Lance Latham and Art Rorheim of North Side Gospel Center in Chicago, AWANA has grown to now reaching more than 1.5 million children weekly in all 50 states through the help of over 400 thousand volunteers. In the U.S. alone it represents over 12,000 churches in 100 denominations. Clubs are also established in over 13,000 churches, schools, and orphanages in over 100 countries outside the U.S.
The founders of AWANA derived its name from the first letters of “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed” as taken from the Bible in 2 Timothy 2:15:
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
We provide care for your little ones that is both safe and uniquely Christian.
We teach your little ones during both services in order to enable you to participate in the worship service, a small group, and/or another ministry.
Each child begins at a check-in station to recieve a name tag and parent tag to present upon pickup.
Our clean and safe nursery is located just outside our auditorium doors. Our nursery check-in location can be seen on our campus map.
Children PreK (potty trained) through 6th grade meet by age group in the lower-level fellowship hall at 9:00 am. Several of our classes use curriculum from Desiring God ministries.
Sunday School runs from Labor Day to Memorial Day.
During our 10:30 worship service and summer months, the children through second grade sit with their families in the service until the message begins, when they are dismissed for age-appropriate worship on the lower-level.
We run a Vacation Bible School every summer for children from Pre-K through those who have completed 6th grade. We generally use Answers in Genesis curriculum.
12:00-2:00pm - 1st & 3rd Sunday
September - April
Our youth group includes both Junior High and High School students. We meet on the first and third Sundays of each month from 12-2pm. After we have lunch together, the Junior Highers have a lesson and some games while the High Schoolers go to a family's home for games and a lesson.
Our teens do a service project every month to reach out into our community. Some of our activities include serving at the Rockford Rescue mission, visiting our widows, making blankets and collecting donations for the women's pregnancy center, serving at our local food bank (Bread of Life), caroling at Christmas time, and sending packages to our military and college students.
Our teen Bible Study meets every Wednesday in the church administration building from 7-8pm. We follow the Meridian school calendar.
During the summers and school breaks, we have Bible Studies, go to summer and winter camps, High School retreats, conferences and community activities. See all our youth events in our church calendar.
